Inserting a citation in a footnote

I am using word 15 on a MAC and endnote 7.  When I insert a citation in a footnote with write while you cite, the full citation appear even though I only want it to appear in the bibliography.  I have tried to edit the citation and hide it but nothing works. I can use simple text rather than the citation in the footnote but then the refererence doesn't appear in the bibliography.
